While there are many great reasons to move to Hawaii, affordable real estate isn’t one of them. Hawaii boasts the highest average home value in the country, making it a difficult place to buy a home on a writer’s salary.

While California offers the highest mean annual salary for writers in the country, the exceptionally high property values in the state make housing out of reach even for those who are running successful writers’ careers. The mean annual salary for writers in Utah falls directly in the middle of the list nationwide.
